More than 80 years ago, a visionary group of volunteers led by Edward T. Bedford saw the growing needs of the community and had the courage to fashion an institution that would serve and better it.

Over the years, the Westport Weston Family Y has evolved with the times. What started out as an exclusive boy's club is today an inclusive community center that bridges the generations. The Family Y serves the youngest to the oldest members of our community whose common bond is good health in spirit, mind and body.

New Building

Examples of the programming and services we provide to people living in Westport, Weston and surrounding communities include the Sports & Recreation gymnastics program which has enabled youngsters to compete at the national level and the Aquatics Department staff who have taught thousands of children to swim. Our Childcare program, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, provides early care and education for children 6 weeks to 6 years old. With its American Camping Association accreditation, Camp Mahackeno has been the place to revel in outdoor summer fun for thousands of children and the School-Age program runs after-school activities in the Westport schools. As well, our commitment to the health and well-being of the adults and senior citizens in our community remains undiminished.

As remarkable as our accomplishments have been, there have been exceptions. Members that are physically challenged cannot maneuver throughout the building. Childcare resides in the basement with no outdoor playground. A therapeutic swim class for seniors competes with infants for time in the warm-water Brophy Pool. There are waiting lists for swim lessons and children taller than sixty-one inches cannot participate fully in the gymnastics program. And, quite simply, we have run out of space.

Our goal is to continue our tradition of serving the greater good - and doing so in a facility that meets all safety and code requirements, and with programs and activities that will serve the community for generations to come.

This community expects nothing less from their Family Y. And building a new, state-of-the-art facility at our Mahackeno Campus will meet that expectation.
