Staff FAQs

What time does work start?
Every morning the directors meet with the entire staff promptly at 8:30am.

At 8:45 campers start arriving at camp. It's your responsibility to pick up the folder for your group and bring it to LOGS. At LOGS you must take attendance, give any camper notes to unit Directors, collect lunches and keep your campers relatively quiet and under control.

What do I have to wear at camp?
Each staff member is required to wear a staff shirt each day; Camp Mahackeno provides three shirts. On theme days, you can dress accordingly. Some of our themes include, but are not limited too; July 4th on the 3rd, crazy hat day, 70's day, pajama day, and much, much more. Each staff member is required to wear sneakers and appropriate shorts/pants.

What qualifications and experience do I need to have?
Experience supervising school-age children, preferably in a camp environment, and/or successful completion of a Counselor in Training program, and/or babysitting experience.

Can I leave for lunch?
At lunchtime you are expected to remain on camp and keep an eye on your campers. One of the most important things you can do is HAVE YOUR CAMPERS CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES.

What is expected of me as a counselor?
Once the daily schedule starts you lead your group to different scheduled periods. Here's what's expected of you at the different program areas:
  • Aid the program specialists in supervising the campers
  • Participate with the campers in the different program areas
  • Stay at the program area
  • Count your kids at least 3x an hour to make sure everyone is there!
  • At the pool, be in the locker room helping the kid's change, supervising the campers, and be ready to go in the pool EVERYDAY!
  • At canoes, Shawnee and Mohegan counselors go in the canoes with the campers.
What time is my day finished?
As a Shawnee and Mohegan counselor, dismissal begins at 3:45pm; as a Lakota, Cayuga, Apache, Ranger and Adventure Camp counselor, dismissal beginning at 4:15pm. Your day is done as soon as your last camper goes home.

Is there an orientation?
Yes, there is a 3 day, 20 hour orientation mandatory for all new and returning staff members. The dates are generally in June before the start of camp. This is a time where you meet your co-counselors, engage in team building activities, and learn the ins and outs of Camp Mahackeno.

What kind of "other responsibilities" do I have?
There are four family nights per summer, generally the second Thursday of each session. You need to be here from 5:30-7:30 making a point to speak with the parents of campers. If you are an Adventure or Ranger Counselor, overnights are required one time during each session.

Do I need Community CPR and First Aid certifications?
Yes, you must have current CPR and First Aid certifications good through the end of the summer. Camp Mahackeno offers classes in June, which are at cost to the staff member.

How do I get paid?
Counselors are paid a salary - not an hourly rate. If we have all your paperwork is in by the first day of camp you receive your first paycheck on the second Friday of session 1 and every two weeks thereafter. Your summer salary includes:
  • 8 weeks of camp
  • 20 hours of staff training
  • your attendance at 4 family nights
Do I have to swim and canoe?
Each staff member is required to change into his/her appropriate bathing suit during each swim class and help assist with lessons. Certified Lifeguards will instruct the children in their swim classes.

Shawnee and Mohegan counselors must go out in the canoes; otherwise the children can not go out. The other unit counselors must be prepared to canoe every day and it is to the disgression of the Waterfront Director whether they go out in the canoe.
