Shawnee, Mohegan, Lakota, Cayuga and Apache Units
These five units make up our traditional day camp programs. The Shawnee unit is for campers
entering 1st grade, the Mohegan unit is for campers entering 2nd grade, the Lakota unit is for
campers entering 3rd grade and the Cayuga unit is for campers entering 4th, and Apache is for
campers entering 5th grade. The
campers do age appropriate activities with a sense of belonging and pride in their unit. To
create groups within units, we sort by date of birth so children are with campers closest to
their age.
Ranger Unit
(Entering 6th & 7th grade)
Rangers is the program for older Mahackeno campers. As children grow older their needs and
interests change; the Ranger program was designed with this in mind. Combining on-camp
experiences with fields trips and a Mahackeno sleepover, Rangers have an exciting summer
planned. The daily schedule alternates between scheduled
activities here at camp and local field trips, normally three trips per session. Each session
ends with a Thursday night sleepover at Mahackeno, and the campers are picked up by noon the
last Friday of each session.
While at camp, the Rangers have 5 scheduled periods, a free choice period and scheduled
time to work on projects. All in all, this program will be
an exciting way for 6th and 7th graders to enjoy the summer at Mahackeno.
Leaders in Training (LIT)
(Entering 8th - 9th grade - Ages 13 & 14)
LITs will be spending their time making the exciting
transition from camper to role model.
They will alternate between
traditional camp activities and
leadership development. This
experienced camper will gain
experience working with
school-age children, practice
problem-solving skills and assisting
counselors and CITs. All interested
participants must contact Teen Coordinator
Jason Funkhouser at jfunkhouser@westporty.org
to schedule a meet and greet by June 1st.
Special Cares
(Ages 6-16)
Our Special Cares program offers children with
physical and mental disabilities a traditional day camp experience. Mainstreamed
as far as their ability allows, Special Cares campers are assigned an
age-appropriate Camp Mahackeno unit, and join in as many activities as
possible. The staff to camper ratio is 1:1 or 1:2, providing the camper
with the attention and encouragement. Needed to develop at his or her
own pace.
Counselor in Training (CIT)
(Entering 10th grade, 15 years old)
Under the guidance of the CIT Director and other
qualified staff, the CITs will observe and assist with
the leadership of groups, develop initiatives, clarify
values, and prepare to assume the role of counselor.
The CITs will also undergo leadership training and
increasingly take on more responsibility during
the four weeks. CITs will get regular feedback on
performance. One field trip is scheduled. Interested
participants must contact Teen Coordinator Jason
Funkhouser at jfunkhouser@westporty.org to
schedule an interview.
