The leaders of the Family Y's campaign to fund and construct a modern new Y facility are pleased to announce that we will hold a groundbreaking ceremony regarding the new Y facility on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 2 pm.
The landmark occasion at the Family Y’s Mahackeno Outdoor Center will involve members of the Y’s volunteer governing boards and staff, major donors, public officials, representatives from local community groups, construction partners, Y members and other supporters. The public is also welcome.
“Our campaign to fund and construct a modern, sustainable new home for the Family Y has been years’ long and at times imperiled,” said Rob Reeves, Family Y CEO. “But thanks to the steadfast support of our members, the tireless efforts of the volunteer leaders who guide us and the selfless contributions from hundreds of donors from throughout our community and beyond, we are ready to truly ‘Build What Matters.’”
The Town of Westport issued a Zoning Permit for the new facility on Dec. 21, 2012. Site preparation is scheduled to begin Jan. 14. The principal contractor is Turner Construction Co., which has led such local building projects as the Bedford Middle School and the renovations of Saugatuck Elementary School and Staples High School.
The Y expects to receive a Building Permit from the Town in early February for the construction of the first stage of the new Y, a 54,000 sq. ft. facility that will include a 10-lane, 25-yard lap pool and adjacent warm-water family/teaching/therapeutic pool; expansive Health & Wellness Center; multi-purpose Gymnasium; three group-fitness studios; a Child Watch/Kids’ Adventure Gym area; five locker rooms, including one for those with dependent care; and other amenities of a modern, family-oriented Y facility.
The new Y is expected to open in November 2014. For details about the construction project, please click here (FAQs).
The Family Y has also scheduled an informational Q&A session about the construction project. That meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 pm in the 2nd-floor Board Room of the Y’s downtown facility. This meeting is also open to the public, with a special invitation extended to nearly 100 homeowners neighboring the Y’s Mahackeno campus.
“The priorities and concerns of Y members, neighbors and the communities we serve have impacted every facet of the design of our new Y and its development process,” said Rosemary Halstead, past Board president and current chair of the Building What Matters capital campaign. “As the stewards of our beloved Mahackeno property – longtime home of our summer day camp – we are committed to ensuring that construction of our new Y will be undertaken with the utmost regard for protecting the environment, abiding by all regulations required of us and minimizing any inconveniences that come with the construction of a modern new building like the Y.”
