Point-to-Point Swimmers Make a Splash

The Westport Weston Family Y's 36th annual Point-to-Point Compo Beach Swim saw a field of 130 aquatic athletes tackle the mile-long course off the east beach on Sunday, July 20.

"This is one of the great events and traditions in Westport," said First Selectman Jim Marpe, in a news story on by Jarret Liotta. "And one of the things that makes Westport special. Those of you who have been here know that."

NEW: Lifeguard Certification Course, Aug. 11-15

The Family Y is hosting a Red Cross Lifeguarding Course August 11-15, 9 am - 2 pm, for strong swimmers ages 15 and older. These Waterfront Lifeguard Certification Courses will give newly trained Lifeguards more options at places to work, from beaches to parks to private clubs.

This Red Cross lifeguarding course emphasizes practical lifesaving skills and job-related responsibilities. Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer are included. Participants must be able to swim 500 yards without goggles and tread water for 3 minutes.

New! AquaFins Swim Program for Special Needs Children

At the Westport Weston Family Y, we pride ourselves on being an organization that provides access for all members of our community. To meet that goal, we’re happy to introduce AquaFins, a NEW five-week swim program specifically designed for children with special needs, ages 6 to 14.

The Y's AquaFins Therapeutic Swim Lesson Program will be held in our Brophy Pool and is open to Y Members and non-members. Splash! Week Highlights

A huge “Thank You!” to the Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities for making it possible for hundreds of local children to have fun this week while learning vital water-safety skills at the Westport Weston Family Y’s Splash! Week.

The kids — ages 3 to 12 — enjoyed a free 30-minute swim lesson each day during the Spring School Break in the Y’s warm-water Brophy Pool. Recent Swim Meet Results; Feb. 8 Meet Preview

The Westport Weston Family Y’s youngest competitive swimmers traveled to New Milford on Sunday, Feb. 2, for the 8 & Under Y State Championships, held at the Canterbury School’s Higgins Aquatic Center.

“To say I was impressed with our swimmers would be an understatement,” said Water Rat 8 & Under Coach Kristen Finnegan. “We had 48 best times out of a total of 66 swims, and overall our team took 2nd place out of 11 teams at the meet, with a combined score of 524 points.”

Mossman Indoor Tri, Sunday, March 2

The Westport Weston Family Y will host the second annual Mossman Indoor Tri at the Y on Sunday, March 2. Conducted in partnership with Team Mossman Triathlon Club, the indoor triathlon consists of a 15-minute lap swim, 25-minute cycle on a spin bike and 20-minute run on a treadmill.

Highlights from Water Rat Pentathlon Swim Meet

The Westport Weston Family Y Water Rat Swim Team hosted its annual Pentathlon Meet on Jan. 11-12, filling the Stauffer Pool and Weeks Pavilion with hundreds of young swimmers and spectators on both Saturday and Sunday. Along with the dozens of Water Rats entered, swimmers from 10 other teams participated, taking part in the meet’s distinctive five-event format: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Individual Medley.

Nearly 90 members of the Westport Weston Family Y Water Rat Swim Team’s 10 & Under squad traveled to The Canterbury School in New Milford, CT., on Dec. 8 to take part in the annual Regional YMCA of Western CT 10 & Under Winter Classic.

Competing against eight other swim teams, our young Water Rats came home with the Girls, Boys and Team Combined Trophies!

Water Rats Raise $41,000 for Philippines Relief

About 150 members of the Westport Weston Family Y Water Rat Swim Team raised more than $41,000 in the Swim for the Philippines on Wednesday, Nov. 27, a five-hour event to benefit Save the Children’s Typhoon Haiyan relief fund.

Swimmers 9 and over pushed themselves to see how many laps they could swim in 60 minutes; younger swimmers swam for 30 minutes.

Water Rats’ Blansfield to Swim at Northwestern

Jonathan Blansfield, a standout member of the Family Y’s Water Rat Swim Team, signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) with Northwestern University on Friday, November 15. Blansfield is one of three graduating Staples High School students, all swimmers, who have accepted NLI invitations to Division I programs for the fall of 2014. The others are Verity Abel, who will be attending Duke University, and Ian Rainey, who will be going to the University of Michigan.
