About 150 members of the Westport Weston Family Y Water Rat Swim Team raised more than $41,000 in the Swim for the Philippines on Wednesday, Nov. 27, a five-hour event to benefit Save the Children’s Typhoon Haiyan relief fund.
Swimmers 9 and over pushed themselves to see how many laps they could swim in 60 minutes; younger swimmers swam for 30 minutes.

Jonathan Blansfield, a standout member of the Family Y’s Water Rat Swim Team, signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) with Northwestern University on Friday, November 15. Blansfield is one of three graduating Staples High School students, all swimmers, who have accepted NLI invitations to Division I programs for the fall of 2014. The others are Verity Abel, who will be attending Duke University, and Ian Rainey, who will be going to the University of Michigan. The Family Y’s Hafaday Swim Lesson Program for children ages 4 to 8 years old will be offered for four days over the Holidays, Dec. 30 to Jan. 3 (no lesson on Jan. 1). Hafaday takes place from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm each day. The children have a swim lesson and free swim, plus arts/crafts and gym time, with a snack in between. The Family Y Water Rat Swim Team kicked off its 2013-14 Short Course season in fine form at two meets for 12 & Under swimmers held the weekend of Oct. 12-13. On Saturday, Oct. 12, more than 80 Water Rats in the 9-12 Age Group traveled to the New Canaan YMCA to compete in the IM Tough Pentathlon. In a Pentathlon meet, each swimmer swims a 50-yard race of four different strokes – Breast, Fly, Free and Back – as well as a 100-yard Individual Medley (IM) in which they swim a 25-yard lap with each stroke.

The Westport Weston Family Y will be hosting a Red Cross lifeguard course on October 19-20 and 26-27, from 9 am- 5 pm each day. Designed for strong swimmers ages 15 and older, the course emphasizes practical lifesaving skills and job-related responsibilities. Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer are included. Participants must attend all four classes.

More than 120 children tried out for the Westport Weston Family Y’s Water Rat Swim Team on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The Water Rat Swim Team finished their Long Course season this past weekend with a strong showing by its Senior swimmers as the top-finishing Connecticut men’s team at the Eastern Zone Speedo® Super Sectional meet in Buffalo, N.Y.
The Eastern Zone Sectionals championship, held Aug. 1-4, drew more than 500 top swimmers from Virginia to Maine. The 12 & Under members of the Westport Weston Family Y’s Water Rat Swim Team are putting the finishing touches on a highly successful Long Course season. The Long Course season, which features meets contested in 50-meter pools, began May 4 and ends Aug. 10 at the Eastern Zone Age Group Championships in Richmond, Va.
The Water Rat 12 & Under swimmers established seven new team records and have qualified six swimmers for the Eastern Zone meet, the highest level of competition for 12 & Under swimmers.
