The Westport Weston Family Y is hosting a Red Cross Lifeguarding Course on October 4-5 and 11-12, 9 am – 5 pm, for strong swimmers ages 15 and older.
“Our Y has been training lifeguards ever since we added a pool to our downtown facility in 1929,” says Nicole Turechek, the Family Y’s Aquatics Director. “And so far this year we’ve conducted a number of classes, training dozens of new lifeguards.”
“But this certification class will be special, as we expect it to be the first held in our amazing new Aquatics Center at our new Y.”
Water Rat swimmers are doing well in the pool and in school. Bryce Keblish and Daniel Williams recently were awarded USA Swimming Scholastic All American recognition, which means that they had at least a 3.5 GPA for the previous school year and they swam at least one race equal, or lower, to a Junior National 2011 bonus time. (This is the first year for Daniel and the second for Bryce.)
Bryce and Daniel also were recognized as CT Swimming Scholar Athletes, as were Aileen Coyne and Max Wimer.

The Westport Weston Family Y Water Rat Swim Team has hired Chandler Crosby as the team’s new Head Age Group Coach and the Y’s Assistant Director of Competitive Swimming.
Chandler hales from New Canaan, where he swam for the high school and the New Canaan Y. As a club swimmer, Chandler competed at both the Y National and USA Swimming national level. After high school, he attended Southern Connecticut State University, where he was an All American.

Our Family Y’s Building What Matters project to construct a modern new facility at its Mahackeno campus achieved a final milestone on Tuesday, Aug. 12. Call it “Filling What Matters” -- as the spigot was turned on to begin filling the 10-lane, 25-yard lap pool with some 262,672 gallons of water.

The Water Rat Senior Team finished the Long Course swim season with a bang. The Senior Team started their stellar championship run at the CT Senior Open Championships. The Senior Boys’ tied for second with the Cheshire Sea Dogs, an impressive showing considering the Water Rat team was half the size of Cheshire and the first-place finishers.

Thirty Water Rat swimmers from the Westport Weston Family Y participated in the Connecticut Long Course Age Group Championships, July 24-27, at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. Seven Water Rat records, some dating back 15 years, were broken over three days of competition:

Tryouts for the 2014-2015 Water Rat Swim Team will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2014. Exact times will be posted in August. Tryouts are for swimmers 12 years and younger. and cost $25 for swimmers who pre-register and $40 for those who do not. Swimmers who are 13 and older should contact Head Coach Ellen Johnston to arrange a personal evaluation.

The Family Y is hosting a Red Cross Lifeguarding Course August 11-15, 9 am - 2 pm, for strong swimmers ages 15 and older. These Waterfront Lifeguard Certification Courses will give newly trained Lifeguards more options at places to work, from beaches to parks to private clubs.
This Red Cross lifeguarding course emphasizes practical lifesaving skills and job-related responsibilities. Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer are included. Participants must be able to swim 500 yards without goggles and tread water for 3 minutes.

A group of 20 Water Rat swimmers traveled to the University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus July 10-13 to compete in the Sandbox Invitational, an age-group meet for swimmers ages 10 to 12. Hosted by the Retriever Aquatic Club and the Annapolis Swim Club, the meet attracted teams from Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and Canada.

The Westport Weston Family Y's 36th annual Point-to-Point Compo Beach Swim saw a field of 130 aquatic athletes tackle the mile-long course off the east beach on Sunday, July 20.
