Hope for Haiti Swimathon on Feb. 2
On Tuesday, February 2, three weeks to the day after an earthquake struck Port-au-Prince at 4:53 PM, the Water Rat Swim Team will hold a swimathon to raise money for Save the Children's relief efforts in Haiti. Details and contribution sheets will be posted on the team website later this week. The coaching staff will ask every practice group to attend the swimathon as a unified team. Every practice group will have a target number of laps to swim. That target will not be much more than what the children swim in a strenuous practice. We hope that every Water Rat - even those swimming on a boys high school team - will participate in the swimathon.
The Y aquatics department hopes that other YMCA youth sports will join our efforts on February 2nd. The Westport Weston Family Y also is reaching out to neighboring YMCAs in the hope that they will schedule swimathons and other fundraisers on February 2nd.
Twenty-one days after the earthquake has symbolic significance. More than half of Haiti's population is under the age of 21. Children are at particular risk in the weeks ahead, which is why the WWFY has decided to support Westport-based Save the Children.
