Bedford saw the growing needs of the community and had the vision to fashion an institution that would serve and better it - today known as the Westport Weston Family Y Over the years, the Family Y has evolved with the times. What started out as a club for boys is now an inclusive community center that bridges the generations, promoting good health in spirit, mind and body. ![]() The Family Y provides a wide array of programming and services to people living in Westport, Weston and surrounding communities. The Sports & Recreation gymnastics program has enabled youngsters to compete at the national level and the Aquatics Department staff has taught thousands of children to swim. The Child Care program, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, provides early care and education for children 6 weeks to 6 years old. With its American Camping Association accreditation, Camp Mahackeno has been the place to revel in outdoor summer fun for thousands of children and the School-Age program runs after-school activities in the Westport schools. As well, the Family Y is committed to the health and well-being of the adults and senior citizens in the community remains. While the Family Y has been a fixture in Downtown Westport since its inception, the physical plant has deteriorated, keeping the Y from meeting existing and future community needs. The current building has been cobbled together from three separate buildings, constructed at various times. The Y is not compliant with Americans With Disabilities Act requirements, which is a terrible problem for those who are physically challenged and cannot maneuver throughout the building. Child Care resides in the basement with no outdoor playground. A therapeutic swim class for seniors competes with infants for time in the warm-water Brophy Pool. There are waiting lists for swim lessons and children taller than sixty-one inches cannot participate fully in the gymnastics program. It is economically unfeasible to correct all of these issues in the current location. The mission of the Family Y is to build strong, kids, strong families, and strong communities. Its goal is to continue its tradition of providing programs and activities that will serve the community for generations to come -- in a facility that meets all safety and code requirements. This community expects nothing less from its Family Y. And building a new, state-of-the-art facility at the Y’s Mahackeno Campus will meet that expectation. The Family Y | The
