Westport Weston Family Y Planning and Zoning Hearing

After 13 years of searching for a site for our new Y facility we are about to begin our Planning and Zoning hearing. It has been a long process and we need this final approval to move forward and build our new Y at Mahackeno.

We need your support to be successful. Our current Y facility has a wonderful nostalgic 85- year history but to ensure we have a future, we need to build a new Y at Mahackeno.

Whether or not Mahackeno is your first choice for a new Y, it is the only choice and will provide a wonderful campus location for our new facility.

Please join us this Thursday at Town Hall, in a gold Y t-shirt to show your support for our application

Below are some facts about our new Y at Mahackeno. If you have any questions, please contact me at the Family Y.

Sincerely,
Helene Weir

Facts About the Westport Weston Family Y at Mahackeno

First FACT: More than 30 locations were investigated during a 13-year period and no downtown location is available or appropriate for a new Y facility.

Second FACT: Any location in Westport is accessible since most people in the community drive to any destination.

Third FACT: The Y is a charitable non-profit organization which supports individuals and other local charities through its annual Strong Kids Campaign; it provides membership and program support to anyone who requires financial assistance.

Fourth FACT: The Family Y recognized that traffic congestion is a concern in our community and our traffic experts have developed a plan to mitigate traffic traveling to and from our new Y.

Fifth FACT: The new Family Y facility will not cause environmental damage. We have received approvals from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection as well as the Westport Flood & Erosion Control Board and Conservation Commission. All these approvals were upheld at the state and local level.

Sixth FACT: Construction at Mahackeno will not result in massive deforestation. Trees over 8 inches in diameter will be replaced. In total 730 trees will be replaced with 483 trees and 1,189 shrubs.

Seventh FACT: The new Family Y facility and parking will use very little of Mahackeno, Nearly 80% of the site (25 acres) will remain unchanged and will continue to be used for our camp and for other recreational activities by our members and will have some limited public access.

Eighth FACT: The Family Y at Mahackeno will have minimal impact on adjacent property values.

Last FACT: If the P&Z application is denied, the Westport Weston Family Y will have no choice but to close within the next few years. The Family Y is not financially sustainable in its current location and it would be very sad to see our 85 year history of serving Westport and Weston come to an end.
